How I classify cookies
I use just two categories, because two are all I actually need. Technical cookies make the site work and remember your choices: they require no consent (Art. 122 of the Italian Privacy Code). Statistics cookies measure how the site is read: since they belong to a third party able to combine data across sites, they require your prior consent and stay off until you give it.
Technical cookies — always on

It is the only cookie present if you refuse or make no choice. Its whole job is to remember the refusal: without it, the banner would keep coming back.

Until you accept, these cookies do not exist and Google's script is never loaded: your browser contacts no Google server at all and transmits nothing, not even your IP address. That holds for everything — even the typefaces are served from my own server, not from Google Fonts. This is not Google Analytics' default behaviour — it is a configuration choice, and it strikes me as the only honest one.
Cookieless statistics
I also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts visits without installing anything on your device and without reading cookies, localStorage or other identifiers. It therefore falls outside this cookie notice, but I would rather tell you anyway.
Changing your mind
The “Cookie preferences” link at the bottom of every page reopens the banner: from there you can accept or refuse whenever you like. Closing the banner with the X counts as refusing. You can also clear cookies from your browser settings; the banner will then reappear on your next visit.
